Blog Tour w/ Review & Giveaway: The Redhead Plays Her Hand (Redhead #3) by Alice Clayton

Blurb:

The third sexy novel in USA TODAY bestselling author Alice Clayton’s playful and erotic Redhead series continues the sizzling romance between actress Grace Sheridan and Hollywood’s hottest leading man Jack Hamilton.

Grace has landed the lead in a new TV series—but when the director asks her to lose fifteen pounds, she goes public with her weight struggles and suddenly develops a huge fan club who support her right to have curves. But between that and the public’s continuing fascination with her “are they or aren’t they” relationship with Jack, Grace begins to wonder if anyone’s really interested in her because of her upcoming TV series, or if it’s all speculation about the size of her ass and her bedroom partner.

Meanwhile, Jack is voted the Sexiest Man Alive and becomes a little too enamored with the party-hard lifestyle. Grace vows to give him the space he needs to find himself, but then he begins to spiral down from lovable Brit to Hollywood brat. People are talking, but are Jack and Grace? Her career is on the rise, and his continues into the stratosphere, but will she be able to catch him if he falls? Will they ever be able to just be a couple who can hold hands when they walk down the street?

Review:

Grace Sheridan is back, reprising her role as the formerly unidentified love interest of movie star, Jack Hamilton, in the third book of Alice Clayton’s Redhead series. Theirs is an unconventional love story, previously tested by an age gap, distance, and their respective professions, but even after all their ups and downs, they haven’t yet earned their happily ever after. While still infused with Clayton's signature brand of laugh aloud humor, The Redhead Plays her Hand takes on a more serious tone, befitting Grace's character evolution in the final book of the series.

While the first two books were more about Grace’s journey to becoming a successful actress, The Redhead Plays Her Hand chronicles her ascent to fame, both as the are they/aren’t they girlfriend of a famous movie star and as a tabloid target for her weight. Behind the glitz and glamor of stardom is an alternate reality of paparazzi, rabid fans and a carefully-constructed public image - a reality which Grace discovers to be the price of success in Hollywood. As a film and television junkie, I was fascinated by the behind-the-scenes action, soaking in both the delights and the horrors of the entertainment industry.

As a narrator, Grace is an endlessly amusing source of entertainment. Half the fun is waiting to see what she'll say next and the other half is sorting through the wild thought processes circling around in her brain but never actually passing through her lips. I absolutely love that no matter what outrageous comment Grace makes, her friends never bat an eyelash, although this is probably because their commentary is just as colorful. With all of the E-True Hollywood-style drama occurring with Jack, there wasn’t as much opportunity for lighthearted revelry, but Clayton succeeded in reminding me exactly what I love about Grace’s comical personality.

Unlike the two previous books, where Jack is the reasonable and more responsible party, the roles are reversed in this book, with Grace displaying more emotional maturity. Whereas before my one complaint about Grace was that she could've done with having some sense knocked into her, the questionable actions in this narrative belong to Jack, whose character begins a downward spiral as a result of being under the public's constant scrutiny. I think it was a smart decision by Alice Clayton to turn the tables on Jack and Grace’s relationship because it gave her a chance to develop a thicker skin and build her confidence. My respect for Grace grew as she took control of both the professional and romantic aspects of her life and I was more than satisfied with the end result.
