Anna Chastain: Author Spotlight on Morning Star & The Good Side of Crazy w/ Excerpts & Giveaway

Morning Star

When Juliet Foster discovered she was pregnant, she did what she thought was best and ran. She ran to her sister's in California, leaving behind the man she loved in order to protect his future. Now five years later, Chris is pushed back into her life and that of her son. He is still everything she ever wanted, but will her fears and insecurities stop her from making a life with Chris?

“You’re different, you know.”

“How do you mean?” I asked, setting myself up to be offended.

“Relax. I mean different in a positive way. You’re much more sure of yourself now, independent. It’s kinda sexy.” The last part he tried to cover up with his mouth, but I heard it anyway.

Well, I did not know what to say to that, so I stayed quiet, picking at the seam on the couch cushion. When I looked up, he had slid closer to me and lifted up his arm to position it behind me on the couch.

I straightened my posture.

“Are you putting the moves on me, Christopher Dean MacLaren?” I inquired, a laugh bubbling up from my throat.

He laid his head back against the couch, groaning. I stifled my giggles with my hand.

“So what if I am, Juliet Rose Foster?” He asked, wounded.

I shrugged, nerves biting away at my insides. I chewed my bottom lip, daring him with my eyes to make a move, ignoring the voice inside my head that told me this would only cause problems.

His hand moved from my shoulder to the back of my head, to the side of my face. “I’m going to kiss you, Juliet. I have to kiss you.” He told me, pulling me in to meet his lips. My knees were pulled up into his chest, a barrier between us. I unfolded them and he brought them over his lap, never breaking our kiss.

It was just as I’d remembered, the kisses; but even better. He was right about me, I was more confident now than I was when he’d met me. But then so was he. He kissed with a self-assurance that I certainly appreciated. His hands started to wander south and I smiled under his mouth, laughing into his kiss.

“Some things never change, huh?” He returned my laugh, ducking his head into my neck, sending goose bumps shooting down my arms.

The Good Side of Crazy

Shae Martin has been called up for duty, guardian duty. When her dad and stepmother are killed in a car accident, Shae is called up as guardian of her 15-year-old sister, Sadie. It wasn't that long ago that Shae, herself, was a teenager; but you'd think, based on her current relations with Sadie, that it had been a millennia. Shae struggles to balance being a "psuedo-mama" to a teenager, back to living in a small town, in her estranged father's home, with dating and career and her sanity. Sadie's assistant principal, Adam MacCallum, is entirely too delectable for Shae to pass up on, whether or not Sadie approves; and Sadie's bad-boy, Cash, is the thorn in Shae's side that just won't go away. So the question is, can these women navigate the many facets of love in their lives, and resolve to settle their futures without killing/maiming/deleting or becoming each other's worst enemies in the process?

I end up letting Sadie pick the movie and regret it completely when she chooses some freaky horror flick. Lying in bed that night, I’m convinced every sound is a mutant killer. To ease my mind, I grab my phone from off my nightstand and scroll to Adam’s number. I can’t be sure he’s even awake, but it’s worth a shot.

Hey, Mac, I’m a little freaked out over here…any chance you could offer a little distraction?

I lay back, my phone on my chest, and wait. Thankfully, I don’t have to wait long before my phone vibrates back at me.

You know I’d like to invite you over, but you’re so hot I’m afraid you’ll skyrocket my air-conditioning bill…

Um…what? I stare at my phone, confused. Before I can respond, my phone buzzes again.

Baby, you’re so fine I could put you on a plate and sop you up with a biscuit.

I bite my lip as a giggle escapes from between my lips.

I’m sorry, did I get the wrong number??? I respond.

Nope, it’s me, Mr. Right. Just who you’re looking for.

I am confounded. Here is a side of Adam I was not expecting in the least.

Well, Mr. Right, color me distracted…and slightly disturbed. Thank you.

I expect the texts from Adam to stop, but am so wrong. One message after another buzzes through to my phone, each cornier than the one before it.

If beauty were time, you’d be an eternity.

If looks could kill, you’d be a weapon of mass destruction.

If you were a chicken, you’d be impeccable.

If you were a booger, I’d pick you first.

I roll to my side and hide my laughter in my pillow, not wanting to wake Sadie. I don’t even know how to stop him, or if I even can, so I just wait it out. After one more buzz, my phone is quiet. I hold it up to read Adam’s last message.

Are you sufficiently distracted, Shae? Cuz baby, I could go all night…
