Whisper to Me (Between Breaths #3) by Christina Lee: ARC Review

A hot and consuming New Adult romance about a wayward musician and the one girl who keeps him grounded…

At college, Rachel has a reputation for being a sarcastic flirt with a thing for star athletes. No one at school knows that she’d had her heart ripped to shreds by her high school sweetheart, who’d driven them both off the side of the road on a borrowed motorcycle, and then abandoned her. No one knows the real Rachel Mattson—except one person…

Ever since he helped nurse his sister’s feisty best friend back to health, pierced bass player Kai Nakos has been head over heels in love. But the supposed bad boy can’t risk letting Rachel know the truth—especially now that the two of them are back in their hometown for the summer, together for the first time since the months following that fateful night. Never mind that Rachel’s ex is back, groveling for her forgiveness.

Shaken by her ex’s return, Rachel finds herself turning to the one guy she knows she can trust. Kai is willing to hide his feelings for her, just to have Rachel touch him again. After all, this is only a temporary fling. Until it becomes something more. But maybe it had been more all along.

Review by Michelle:

Whisper to Me had me geared up for another heaping helping of sexual tension served up by Christina Lee. I got exactly what I was hoping for and so much more. I may have mentioned a time or two that Christina Lee is the master of anticipation and longing. She also happens to be adept at evoking intense emotions and an expert storyteller as well.

Christina Lee's masterful ability to create an immediate and powerful connection with her characters as well as among those characters is second to none. Whisper to Me takes a peripheral character, Rachel, from the first two books of the series that we know next to nothing about and through a highly developed and painful back-story creates an all new respect and appreciation for her making her a strong contender for series favorite all while exploring the possibility of a friends to lovers relationship with the brother of her childhood best friend that has really always been more to Rachel than meets the eye.

Each male protagonist in this series is extremely different yet just as swoon-worthy as the last. Kai is a musician who has played all sorts of music with countless bands but his passion really lies with jazz. With a soft spot for rock stars/musicians this was such a nice change of pace from the typical bad boy rock star. Kai has had his fair share of notoriety, he has all the irresistible charm of a rocker, and with his long hair and piercings galore he fits certainly the bill but this smooth, sexy bass player was a different spin that was just as enticing and far more original than the musicians usually encountered. Kai also just so happens to be a naughty boy with a mouth that could put some of the best dirty talkers to shame and is guaranteed to make you melt.

More than just about Kai and Rachel finding their way back to one another, more than the electric chemistry the two share, and more than their history that provides a solid foundation to explore any sort of relationship beyond just friends. Whisper to Me is about getting back on track, making important life decisions, facing complicated pasts, figuring themselves out, and finding out what they are truly passionate about in order to set higher standards for themselves and make plans for the future. These two really challenge, compliment, and complete each other. They push each other to be and do better and inspire one another.

The worst part about Christina Lee's books? I become so immersed in the story and so enthralled with every little thing that I greedily devour each and every word and come to the end way too soon. As many times as I reminded myself to savor this book, I still found myself halfway through before I even realized it and the next thing I knew it was over and I was left with the unshakable desire to wipe my mind clean and read it all over again for the first time. Whisper to Me is a worthy addition to an outstanding series and Christina Lee is an author not to be missed.
