Excerpt:

Matt had a sprawling, high-rise apartment in downtown Denver. I probably should have guessed. The rooms were clean and modern, harshly white, with light hardwood floors and gorgeous area rugs. The fixtures were all of matching brushed metal and the décor was spare but tasteful. I recognized a framed John Singer Sargent print on the wall.

Matt loomed as I padded through the neat, quiet rooms. Each time I smiled at him, I thought I caught a glimmer of anxiety in his expression. Why would he be nervous? Was my opinion really that important to him?

"This place is lovely," I said. "It's amazing. I can't believe it was ever messy."

"Oh, I had a maid come through," he said.

"Laurence!" I squealed when I saw the rabbit's hutch in the living room. The hutch was as swanky as Matt's apartment, made of beautiful varnished wood with little gold knobs.

"Your lady love is back," Matt said to the rabbit.

We watched Laurence hop around his hutch for a while. Matt's hovering was making me uneasy—and strangely aroused. He hadn't touched me yet, but I knew he planned to. I assumed his bedroom was down the hall.

Was something wrong? Tension and desire made my stomach clench.

We drifted into the kitchen, Matt right at my back.

"Nice." I swallowed and brushed my hand over the granite countertop. Even the kitchen was immaculate.

I could feel Matt behind me. I thought I heard him take a soft breath. My skin prickled. God, if he didn't touch me soon—

I exhaled in a rush as Matt brought his chest flush against my back. He pinned me to the edge of the island and cupped my breasts from behind. I moaned.

"Are you ready?" he whispered in my ear.

Review by Michelle:

So finally, close to nine months after the release of Night Owl by M. Pierce, after nine months of hype, nine months of having every intention of reading this book as soon as possible, and nine months of failing time and again to give this novel the attention it so deserves, I finally read it. Boy, I had no idea what I was missing! Much like the Grand Canyon that you can never fully appreciate until you experience it yourself, you have no idea just how wondrous this book really is until you have actually read it. In spite of all the great things I had heard, all the times someone told me I needed to read it, all the rave reviews, I had to read it to believe it. And let me tell you, I am a believer.

Night Owl is the epitome of contemporary. Two writers meet online, start off with a little cyber sex, move on to some phone sex, meet up for car sex, throw in a little Skype sex and a whole lot of steamy sex in just about every imaginable variation. It is a very modern and realistic representation of what can happen when you get swept up in the thrill and freedom of the anonymity of the internet as well as the surprising and unanticipated development of true feelings stemming from a few encounters based solely on attraction and sexual gratification with someone that you know next to nothing about. Matt and Hannah do not immediately fall in love long distance nor do they experience love at first sight, they do however have a searing attraction and a building connection that cannot be ignored despite knowing very little about one another and a few other serious complications bound to stand in the way of anything more.

Matthew Sky is one dirty, naughty, kinky boy with the filthiest mouth I have ever encountered making for one deliciously decadent read. Hannah is dominated, demeaned, and debauched but she owns it. This girl is no shrinking violet. She doesn't take any crap, she gives as good as she gets, she relishes in the power of her submission, she is not the least bit naive, and she is an active participant loving every moment of their smoldering sexy times.

Night Owl is hot with a capital H. I was one big ball of pent up sexual tension from the very beginning. These two characters need only talk online or even long distance for a few short minutes and you will be squirming in your seat. It was so steamy in fact, that I quickly got the impression that this novel was not much more than a sexy good time, a great one at that, but one with not a whole lot of substance none the less. I was oh so wrong. The story gradually morphed from a fun, erotic, whirlwind into a strong, emotional, deep narrative dealing with a few serious issues and making me teary, often with just one sentence, one look, or even one word. And it really made me think. Bringing about the often avoided and overlooked question, why is it acceptable for something to happen in a book, but that same action is unforgivable in real life? Why do we forget, ignore, and excuse deception in books, but would never stand for that behavior in our everyday lives? I have often found myself rooting for a protagonist that is morally corrupt in one form or another but would turn my nose up or walk away from this conduct in reality.

And then there is the ending! Um...WHAT THE HELL? I had to read that epilogue 3 times to be sure I read what I think I read. Turns out I read correctly and I'm still in shock.

Night Owl eclipsed every good thing I had heard said about the book as well as any and all expectations and even first impressions that I had. It is a book that is so mesmerizing it is easy to lose yourself within the pages, whole blocks of time, and all sense of responsibility in order to immerse yourself fully within the story and hang on each and every spellbinding word.

  1. I haven't read yet. The reviews alone make this book worth reading. So far, every review I've read screams that this book is amazing, to say the least. I don't know why but the fact of a man having a pet rabbit intrigues and fascinates. -Nicole Johnson
