Review by Michelle:

Usually when referring to dark stories we are talking about dark romances such as Pepper Winters' Monsters in the Dark series in which there are some heinous, ominous, brutal events and circumstances involved yet through it all, love blossoms and still manages to conquer all. Debt Inheritance is no dark romance. It is 100% dark, but if you are looking for romance you won't find even a stitch. Not yet at least. It is, however, intriguing, beguiling, chilling, and acutely distressing. It is everything you love in a Pepper Winters novel explored in a completely different, uninhibited way that leaves you shocked, appalled, and begging for more.

As usual Pepper Winters' writing is superb. It is eloquent and expressive amongst the devilry, it is poetry amongst the gloom, and flowing and lyrical amongst the intensity. There is nothing simple or predictable about this story, the pacing is impeccably smooth and just right, and the flow is utterly spellbinding.

How does Pepper Winters draw you into such an uncaring and dastardly character? Jethro seems to have not a single redeeming quality and nothing more going for him other than good looks, wealth, and power. Okay so that really doesn't sound so bad, but when this description accompanies the words cold, remorseless, and merciless, it doesn't seem so appealing after all. Despite all his unsavory characteristics, Jethro somehow, someway worms himself beneath your skin and you find yourself drawn to him, hoping he's really not so bad beneath it all, waiting for one small act of kindness or compassion to justify the irrational feelings you are having for one of the most despicable characters to date.

As for Nila, she really surprised me about half way through this story which was a very good thing as I could feel myself starting to get annoyed with her timid and weak ways. There weren't always times when she could or should fight back, but that didn't mean she had to take everything that was dished out for her lying down. I gained a good deal of respect and even found myself sympathizing with her more once she found her own way to stand strong against all odds.

Keep in mind, I did say that there was no romance, but I never said there was no heat. The sexual tension is completely electrifying. Even the simplest of Nila and Jethro's encounters is totally titillating and ripe with anticipation and an edge of fear, an exhilarating combination that quickens your breath and raises your temperature.

Debt Inheritance is one major head trip. A labyrinth of unanswered questions and mystery to attempt to sort out and work through. It reads amazingly quickly and was over way too soon. The ending was thrilling and staggering and absolutely perfect for this story. This is a huge cliffhanger but it is so heart racingly unpredictable, wonderfully fitting, and completely worth it. I will be waiting with bated breath for the next installment.
