Therapy (Therapy #1) by Kathryn Perez: Blog Tour Review & Giveaway

Blurb:

I’m needy.

I’m broken.

Cutting breaks through my numbness, but only opens more wounds.

Depression, self-harm, bullying....that's my reality.

Sex and guys....that's my escape.

The space between the truth and lies is blurred leaving me torn, lost and confused. And while the monsters that live in my head try to beat me-- the two men that I love try to save me.

This is my story of friendship, heartache, and the grueling journey that is mental-illness.

Sometimes you have to get lost in order to be found…

Review by Michelle:

If you know anything about me, you will know that Therapy by Kathryn Perez is exactly my kind of book. I love nothing more than to be made to feel deep, raw, genuine emotion, good or bad, while reading. I love to be moved, transfixed, and transported by a story so powerful it feels as though it is a part of you. Therapy is positively crippling and brutally devastating yet the intoxicating blend of both forward and backward momentum that takes place along the arduous journey undertaken in this story is powerfully potent, intensely moving, and highly inspirational.

I have such a profound admiration and deep respect for an author that can make you experience words on a page as if they are your very own thoughts and feelings. An author that can rip your heart out and stomp on it until there is next to nothing left, pick up each and every one of those pieces, put them back together so perfectly you would never be able to tell it had been so thoroughly destroyed, and then take that fragile heart and make it soar. Kathryn Perez is one of those authors.

The way in which Therapy shines a light on some very serious issues makes this not just an enjoyable reading experience, but one that is extremely important and meaningful as well. The empathy and awareness that this story is bound to stir in each and every reader is beyond touching and absolutely priceless. No matter your social status, every single one of us knows what it feels like to not be loved and adored or even liked by everyone at some point in time and it is extremely easy to understand and identify with Jessica's pain on some level. And whether you have had to live with mental health issues or not, the truth is, we all have doubt, insecurities, days that we are down, and struggles with coping mechanisms that are not the healthiest way of getting through. While some can only imagine what these things must feel like from beneath the burden or depression, in one form or another this story will touch you, affect you, and change you.

Therapy definitely has its fair share of dark and heavy issues. It can feel agonizing and soul crushing at times, but under it all there is a beautiful, insightful, and inspirational love story unraveling and I'm not even referring to the two significant men that have touched Jessica's life. No, the biggest and most important love that develops over the course of this story is Jessica's on again, off again love affair with herself. One that forces you to take a look at your own feelings of self-love, self-worth, and self-respect and encourages you to love yourself above all and "embrace our mistakes and our dark times, because without them we'd never have the lessons and the light."

"The story was fiction, but the messages were not." There are no truer words to convey how I feel about this book. Therapy is so full of important emotionally charged moments that I had to shield my eyes with a pair of sunglasses from all the highlighting that took place. There are so many truths, so much wisdom, so many thoughtful words and significant lessons to take to heart and carry with you throughout your own precarious journey through life. This is not a story that I take for granted in any way, one that will stay with me for a very long time, and the messages contained within its pages are ones that I wholeheartedly embrace and will not soon forget.
