Owned by Fate (a Serve novel) by Tessa Bailey: ARC Review

Blurb:

A sexy category romance from Entangled's Brazen imprint...

Her mind rejects his world. But her body knows its master.

Journalist Caroline Preston arrives at Serve, New York City’s hottest BDSM club, with one goal—to hate it. If her brother wasn’t trying to turn the family’s respectable financial magazine into a publication that features “lifestyle” pieces for the wealthy and adventurous, she wouldn’t even be there, trying to write an article about a world she doesn’t understand. But then she sees him.

Jonah Briggs doesn’t leave his post for just anyone. As the owner of the club, his sole purpose is to ensure that his clientele get everything they need, but when he sees Caroline, his only thought is what he wants—to dominate the sexy little reporter and give the most exquisite pleasure she’s ever experienced.

Caroline has no intention of entering that particular lion’s den—not with her family’s reputation at stake—no matter how dark, sexy, and complex the lion in question may be. But with every encounter, she craves more, and with every slide of his lips, she realizes Jonah might just be the man to break down all her defenses…if she’ll let him.

About the Author:

Thank you for your interest in my books! I'm Tessa and I live in the crazy, loud, overcrowded borough of Brooklyn, New York. I love it here. This city is a constant source of inspiration, which is why I've decided to set my most recent books in the Line of Duty Series here.

I moved to New York when I was eighteen, the day after I graduated high school. Threw my suitcase in the back of a Chevrolet Cavalier and drove across the country to find my adventure. I'm still finding it, little by little.

Thank you for being a part of it.

Review by Yvette:

No one writes an Alpha male quite like Tessa Bailey, who has written a number of dirty-talking heroes and only seems to be getting better. Case in point, Jonah Briggs, proprietor of the BDSM club, Serve, which is the setting for the author’s latest book, Owned by Fate. Jonah is the textbook definition of an Alpha male: dominating, alluring, commanding, and confident. I could completely sympathize with heroine Caroline Preston’s plight as she is undeniably affected by Jonah’s blatant interest in her even as she attempts to fight their mutual attraction. Owned by Fate is driven by the emotional and physical connection between Jonah and Caroline – a strong connection formed quickly and only grows as the narrative progresses.

From their first elicit, tension-filled meeting, Jonah begins to expose Caroline to the lighter, pleasure-seeking side of BDSM, with just a touch of kink to ratchet up their already significantly steamy sexual encounters. For Jonah, words are a tool of seduction, captivating Caroline just as effectively as his certain proclivities in the bedroom. His words are so relentlessly provocative and downright scandalous that I had to reassure myself at least a couple dozen times that he did, in fact, say THAT. Please excuse me while I highlight yet another deliciously naughty quote…

I haven't read many BDSM-themed books so I can't claim to be an expert on the subject, but Owned by Fate was very much an introduction into the lifestyle, viewed from the eyes of Caroline, who finds the idea to be taboo, and Jonah, who desires to act as her guide throughout her journey. Caroline is torn in two, not wanting to enjoy Jonah's lifestyle but at the same time, being inexplicably drawn towards it. Her indecision is a huge source of conflict in the book, tearing them apart and bringing them together on multiple occasions, making me feel an acute discomfort that didn’t quite dissipate until the book’s climax. Caroline and Jonah’s journey is turbulent and filled with conflicts emotions from hope to despair and relief to anguish, but their fierce passion and sizzling chemistry remains a constant. Owned by Fate only scratched the surface of these characters and the series’ potential for growth and I’m interested to see how things will progress.
