Rival (Fall Away #2) by Penelope Douglas: Blog Tour Review, Excerpt & Giveaway

From the New Adult sensation and New York Times bestselling author of Until You

Madoc and Fallon. Two estranged teenagers playing games that push the boundaries between love and war…

She’s back.

For the three years she’s been away at boarding school, there was no word from her. Back when we lived in the same house, she used to cut me down during the day and then leave her door open for me at night.

I was stupid then, but now I’m ready to beat her at her own game…

I’m back.

Three years and I can tell he still wants me, even if he acts like he’s better than me.

But I won’t be scared away. Or pushed down. I’ll call his bluff and fight back. That’s what he wants, right? As long as I keep my guard up, he’ll never know how much he affects me….

Fallon and Tate

Reaching over, I turned my alarm clock to see it was only six in the morning. Tate threw her backpack on her bed and started yanking stuff out of drawers. She was still in the same clothes from last night. Usually when she spent the night at Jared’s, she came home freshly showered and dressed, ready for class. Right now, she looked rushed.

“What classes do you have today?” she asked, not looking at me as she darted around our room.

I swallowed the dryness from my mouth. “Um…Calc III and Sex and Scandal in Early Modern England.”

“Nice,” she teased in a deep voice.

“The last one is a gen. ed.,” I explained, embarrassed. “Why? What’s up?”

“Do you feel like skipping?” She stuffed clothes into her backpack and then turned to look at me. “Jax showed up at Jared’s dorm this morning. No one’s heard from Madoc. He’s not returning calls, texts, IMs….” She trailed off, hands on her hips.

“You haven’t talked to him at all lately?” I looked away, not wanting her to see the worry I was sure was on my face.

“Yeah, Jared and I let it go at first, because we thought Madoc needed his space, and we’ve all been so busy, but if Jax is worried, and Lucas probably hadn’t had contact, either, then it’s definitely past time to check it out.” She stopped, finally taking a breath.

She came over, tapping my leg and smiling. “So let’s go on a road trip!”

About the Author:

Penelope Douglas is a writer and teacher in Las Vegas. Born in Dubuque, Iowa, she is the oldest of five children. Penelope attended the University of Northern Iowa, earning a Bachelor's degree in Public Administration, because her father told her to "just get the damn degree!" She then earned a Masters of Science in Education at Loyola University in New Orleans, because she HATED public administration. One night, she got tipsy and told the bouncer at the bar where she worked (yes, she was drunk at work)that his son was hot, and three years later she was married. To the son, not the bouncer. They have spawn, but just one. A daughter named Aydan. Penelope loves sweets, the show Sons of Anarchy, and she shops at Target almost daily.

Review by Michelle:

I have been waiting for Madoc's story since the moment he cracked his first joke and unleashed his wit in the first book in the series, Bully. Rival was far from what I was expecting yet Penelope Douglas delivered exactly what I needed. It is everything I was hoping for; fun, addicting, and emotionally charged. It was also much deeper, more intense, with more extreme highs and lows than I anticipated making it thoroughly enthralling, completely consuming, and amazingly touching.

I am a sucker for a love/hate relationship as evidenced by my complete adoration of the first two books in the series. My favorite romance is one that starts as hostility. This is a love/hate of a whole different kind. There is a very fine line between love and hate and the rivals in this story skate that line perfectly. Balancing a story on the edge of affection and loathing lends itself to a smoldering like no other. A white hot ember just waiting for the opportunity to ignite and engulf those fervent enough to fan the flames. The resentment and feelings of betrayal between Madoc and Fallon ran so deep and were so affecting it only served to fuel the fierce fire between them. The pent up lust and sexual tension lit an inferno that burned bright the entire story and only grew stronger with each encounter.

Madoc has always been the perfect comic relief. He is a clown, a jokester, hilariously funny, and the life of the party. Rival shows a whole other completely unexpected, distinctly endearing, and incredibly heartwarming side. We have seen the fun, lighthearted side of Madoc, we have seen the brash, obnoxious side, we have even seen the underhanded, devious side when he was helping Jared antagonize Tate, but in this story we see the sweet, sensitive, giving, considerate side. Believe it or not, it's in there and it is perfectly intermixed with the one liners and witty retorts.

Fallon is no wilting flower. She can hold her own with the best of them. Her quick wit, her strength and determination, and her perseverance makes her the perfect adversary for Madoc and in the end the perfect match. She is everything you would hope for for someone like Madoc and a strong female lead to admire and respect.

In true Penelope Douglas fashion Rival is yet another emotional rollercoaster. Who would have thought a story about Madoc, one of the most fun and carefree characters I have read to date, could be so heavy and really pretty tragic. My head and heart were pitched haphazardly back and forth cycling through humor, amusement, contentment, tension, anxiety, and just enough heartbreak.

Rival is powerfully emotive. Not only is the range of emotion experienced staggering, the intensity of each is profound. It is the ideal journey for Madoc and the perfect complement to a much loved series. I am continually astounded by Penelope Douglas' skill to captivate and enamor. Jax's story is next and if he proves to be even half as intriguing as he appears, Falling Away promises to be just as good.
