First Debt (Indebted #2) by Pepper Winters: Blog Tour Review & Giveaway

Blurb:

“You say I’ll never own you. If I win—you willingly give me that right. You sign not only the debt agreement, but another—one that makes me your master until your last breath is taken. You do that, and I’ll give you this.”

Nila Weaver’s family is indebted. Stolen, taken, and bound not by monsters but by an agreement written over six hundred years ago, she has no way out.

She belongs to Jethro as much as she denies it.

Jethro Hawk’s patience is running out. His inheritance gift tests, challenges, and surprises him—and not in good ways. He hasn’t leashed her but he thinks he might’ve found a way to bind her forever.

Debts are mounting. Payment waiting.

Review by Michelle:

After the insufferable cliffhanger at the end of Indebted it appeared as though I was right where Pepper Winters wanted me, on pins and needles counting down the hours to find out what happens next and where Jethro and Nila's tempestous relationship will take them. First Debt is just as sexy, twisted, and suspenseful as Indebted but this time around we are already in deep with these two characters. While a few important questions are answered, even more surface, burrowing us even farther into this lust filled, wickedly seductive, desperate power struggle and deadly game. First Debt is incredibly thrilling, intensely alluring, and impossibly mind bending.

As much as Nila started to impress me in the first book, she is a force to be reckoned with in this one. Nila has had an awakening, she has fully embraced her feelings and sexuality, she is completely adaptable, unpredictable, and a quick study. While constantly vying for dominance and the upper hand, Nila comes out the victor a surprising number of times allowing us to see her strength, her determination, her resilience, and her cunning all while lending a bit of vulnerability and humanity to Jethro. It seems I wasn't the only one impressed by Nila's evolution. Jethro may just finally be gaining a healthy respect for his pet.

In this book we get to know more about Jethro and a bit of the truth behind his icy exterior. While this is welcome and exciting news, Pepper Winters skillfully and meticulously uses this information to weave more complexity into the tale which only leads to more questions on top of questions. It does, however, go a long way in understanding Jethro and aiding in the thawing of your own heart towards him. Not only is Jethro baffling and mysterious, but it slowly becomes apparent as the tiniest of threads begin to unravel that there is even more to this man that ever imagined.

It seems a bit backward after everything that transpires over the course of almost two whole books between Nila and Jethro, but the heightened tension that hinges on a single kiss between the two was close to unbearable. As an avid enthusiast of sexual tension I can honestly say that I am not sure if I have ever been so anxious, so invested in a simple kiss before. I wasn't even sure it would actually happen, but it made me hyperaware of every situation, every close call, and every possibility and I loved every second of anticipation.

Pepper Winters is not just the master of eloquent and evocative prose, sinisterly sexy storylines, and enticing, oddly endearing, and completely captivating and commanding males, but she is also a genius when it comes to staggering surprises. Some information along the way and another humdinger of an ending leaves you turned completely inside out and upside down with no idea what will happen next, no expectation as to where things could go from here, and no clue how things could possibly get any better or any worse.

So much progress was made in this installment of the series and yet not. Despite making some huge leaps and bounds, Jethro is still very much an enigma, the women of the Hawk family an absolute mystery, and of course Nila's fate is still entirely up in the air. First Debt and the Indebted series has me completely consumed and totally under its spell. I am a wreck after finishing and can't wait to get my hands on more.
