Ready or Not (Ready #4) by J.L. Berg: Blog Tour Review

Blurb:

Born into wealth and privilege, free-spirited Liv Prescott left it all behind when she realized there was more to life than living off of trust funds and barely skating by. Since then, she’s worked and fought for everything she’s earned and never looked back at the world or the family she left behind.

Jackson Reid is starting over with a new job in a brand new city. A single father to his son Noah, he hopes the change will help strengthen the bond that has seemed to suffer since puberty reared its ugly head. What he hadn’t planned on was Liv—his exotic next-door neighbor who drives him insane with her wild, new age lifestyle, but still manages to leave him aching for more.

As challenges arise and feelings intensify, will these neighbors be able to look past their differences and find a middle ground? When love comes knocking, will they be ready, or not?

About the Author:

I’m a California native, who lives in the South – Virginia to be exact. I still prefer sushi to fried chicken, avocados to okra, and I absolutely loathe humidity. I do love watching the seasons change though. My husband and I have been here for ten years, and I still get giddy like a school girl every time it snows.

I’m married to my high school sweetheart. We were married young, barely out of high school. Everyone told us we were crazy and stupid. We’ll be celebrating 12 years of marriage this year, and I love him more every single day. We’re living proof that true love knows no age limit.

We’ve been blessed with two beautiful daughters who continue to amaze and inspire me, and are probably making me go a bit insane. I’m obsessed with yoga and pilates and am a complete chocoholic. I apologize in advance for the amount of sweets in my book.

I’m absolutely obsessed with romance novels (duh) and probably could have built a vacation home with the amount of money I’ve invested in them over the years. Romance novels take you to another place, making your heart race, emotions swell, passion run free. After so many years of meeting hundreds of fictional characters and discovering their worlds, I found myself creating my own.

Review by Michelle:

I am a big fan of the Ready series by J.L. Berg and after reading Ready for You I was extremely excited to find out more about Mia's quirky, hippie best friend, Liv, in Ready or Not. Of course I was anticipating Liv meeting her perfect match, but the addition of a third charming and endearing character really made this story and created another unique dynamic showing that love comes in all shapes, sizes, and variations and that it's never too late to change your mind or find the one.

Jackson, Liv's sometimes frustrating next door neighbor, is a single dad. A nice twist on the common single parent theme. Not only is Jackson a single dad but, even better, he is the father of a tweener son making for all sorts of awkward, amusing, and difficult situations.

Noah is everything that an almost teenager should be, sullen and sweet, funny and a bit sarcastic. I really love the way that Noah fits into the equation. Noah is really what brings Liv and Jackson together and Liv soon comes to find that she is not just in love with Jackson, but also Noah, she finds herself inseparable from Jackson and Noah as well, and comes to realize that despite her ever present need for independence and strength, she actually needs both Jackson and Noah in her life. There was not just one missing piece in Liv's life, but really two empty spaces that could only be filled by this man and his son and really each of the three characters fills a place in the other's lives distinctly and perfectly creating a unique bond and an unshakeable and loving family.

I greatly enjoyed the antagonism between fun and slightly eccentric Liv and conventional and responsible Jackson in the beginning. Setting the stage for a relationship built on intense feelings that is all the more passionate and amusing in the long run. This antagonism also leads to a cute and fun constant competition between the two and one upping each other right up until the very end culminating in the biggest surprise and sweetest contest of all.

What I really loved about this story was that it was easy. Don't get me wrong there was resistance, there were bumps in the road, and there was almost a major setback, but there was no long list of issue after issue that threatened to ruin them as a couple, no back and forth and on again, off again. Once Jackson, and then Liv, finally realized and expressed their feelings for each other, that was it, they were rock solid and free to conquer all that life throws at you together. I loved that although one may think they aren't for settling down with one person or long term commitment, once you find the game changer, that someone that has the ability to make you rethink your every decision, it is easy to reconsider and try something new on for size. You may just find that it's the best thing that has ever happened to you.

Ready or Not is another great addition to a wonderful series. Sweet, funny, and entertaining, a refreshing and heartwarming story that will bring a smile to your face and keep it there the whole way through.
