Review by Yvette :
Precisely one chapter in to You Were Mine by Abbi Glines, I was certain that this book would destroy me. Perhaps I was being a bit melodramatic but, knowing the heartbreaking and emotionally turbulent path that has led protagonists, Bethy Lowry and Tripp Neward, to this particular point in time, prepared me for a gut-wrenching, impassioned journey and Abbi Glibes did not disappoint. The narrative is set in the present and interspersed with flashbacks from eight years ago when Trip and Bethy first met. These two characters share a tragic past, with so much emotional baggage between them, it seems impossible that they could ever fix what has been broken.
Readers are presented with two very different sides to the couple: the desolate, world-weary adults of today and the hopeful and starry-eyed youths of the past. The “Bethy and Trip” of eight years ago shows how it could be between them once again – the spark of mutual attraction, the undeniable connection, and the sizzling heat that ratchets up every sensual encounter from a spark to a raging inferno. There is anger and resentment simmering between them but there is also longing and desire, which is a heady combination that creates a thick and potent sexual tension between the couple. It was enlightening to be able to compare Bethy and Tripp’s past and present selves because, even though they have changed from the individuals that they were, there is still an invisible thread that connects them and stirs up long-held feelings.
Despite everything that happened between Bethy and Tripp, all the hurt and confusion and unresolved issues, I couldn’t help but cling to the hope that Bethy and Tripp could discard the pall of the past that’s been hanging over them since they first parted ways. The narrative follows Bethy and Tripp as they finally confront their demons and attempt to forgive past mistakes so that each could find a way to move past their pain and have a second chance at love with each other. You Were Mine is an intense journey full of highs and lows that will have your heart panging one moment before your stomach erupts with butterflies in the next, never ceasing its grip on your emotions until the very last page.
