The Return (Titan #1) by Jennifer L. Armentrout: Blog Tour Review, Character Interview & Signed Paperback Giveaway

Blurb:

The Fates are cackling their bony asses off…

It’s been a year since Seth made the deal with the gods that pledged his life to them. And so far, the jobs they’ve given him have been violent and bloody–which is kind of all right with him. But now Apollo has something else in mind for Seth. He’s got to play protector while keeping his hands and fingers off, and for someone who really has a problem with restraint, this new assignment might be the most challenging yet.

Josie has no idea what this crazy hot guy’s deal might be, but it’s a good bet that his arrival means the new life she started after leaving home is about to be thrown into an Olympian-sized blender turned up to puree. Either Josie is going insane or a nightmare straight out of ancient myth is gunning for her.

But it might be the unlikely attraction simmering between her and the golden-eyed, secret-keeping Seth that may prove to be the most dangerous thing of all.

Because history has once again been flipped to repeat.

Book 1 in the new adult paranormal TITAN series, spin-off to the best selling COVENANT series.

Character Interview with Josie:

What's something only your closest friend would know about you?

There aren't a lot of people who know much about me, but Erin knows all about my mom and that's something that I don't really talk about to anyone.

What's your favorite childhood memory? Least favorite?

Favorite? Probably running around in my red cowgirl outfit. I loved that thing. Lease favorite? A conversation I had with my mom when I was about four years old.

What's your most treasured possession?

 Easy. That's my eReader.

What are 5 items you need to carry with you wherever you go?

I don't have the luxury of even carrying 5 items with me these days, or at least not any items that I've chosen for myself.

What book are you reading right now on your Nook?

Seth thinks I'm reading Harry Potter. I'm going to just let him keep thinking that he's right.

If there was one thing you could change about yourself, what would it be?

I would stop myself from thinking that I'm going crazy all the time.

What's your idea of the perfect guy?

A guy with nice hands. Yeah, I know it's a little weird, but I've got a serious thing for hands. And someone who isn't a douche-wad. Those are two pretty good starting points.

What was your first impression of Seth?

I thought he had beautiful hands because I saw his hands before the rest of him. I told you I had a thing for hands. When I did look at him, I couldn't believe that a guy that hot was standing in front of me. But then he spoke. Kind of ruined it for me.
Where do you see yourself 5 years from now?

I would've been able to answer that question before I met Seth, but now I have no idea. Everything in my life is completely insane right now.
If you were to die tomorrow, what would be your biggest regret?

There's someone that I think I owe an apology. I haven't gotten to apologize yet. That would be my biggest regret.

Review by Yvette:

If you haven't read The Covenant series by Jennifer L. Armentrout, stop reading this immediately and go one-click each and every book in the entire series! The Return may be the first in the new Titan series, but it's a spinoff from The Covenant, following the aftermath of the epic battle of the gods in which Seth a.k.a. the Apollyon, was and is still a key player. Yes, the author does an impeccable job recapping the events that led to the current point in time but, to truly understand the incredibly transformation that Seth has undergone (and to avoid spoilers), it's important to follow his story from the beginning, especially because the past continues to have a stronghold over him. Although Jennifer L. Armentrout typically writes her stories through a female narrator, The Return is narrated via dual perspectives – Seth and his fellow protagonist, Josie Bethel. This story is just as much Seth’s as it is Josie’s, drawing on mythology well-known to fans of The Covenant series, while also establishing a new path for these characters featuring new fantastical creatures, new dangers and a new romance in which readers can become fully immersed.

Of all the author’s heroes, Seth has always been one of my favorites, mostly because his devil-may-care attitude and tendency to say whatever comes to mind is an endless source of entertainment, but also because he’s always been a bit of a mystery. The Return sets out to unravel the intricacies of Seth’s character but the remnants of the past continue to intrude on the present, reminding us of Seth’s many mistakes. There's a sense of helplessness and hopelessness that Seth carries around like an invisible but tangible presence, but, rather than letting this heaviness consume the narrative, a relief is introduced in the form of Josie – an adorkably awkward, college-aged young woman whose biggest problem seems to be her lack of social skills when it comes to the opposite sex. What I love about Jennifer L. Armentrout, though, is that her heroines may be unassuming but there’s always more to them than meets the eye.

Those who’ve read The Covenant series will remember Seth as a perennial playboy and the odd man out in an extremely complicated love triangle. The spark of attraction and sizzling chemistry that was lacking between Seth and his would-be love interest, Alex, is present and accounted for between him and Josie. They might be polar opposites at first glance, but they quickly bond over the surprising amount of things they have in common, including their unfortunate position as pawns in a high stakes game of chess between the gods and the Titans. Josie gets to see a side to Seth that no one else is privy to – a side that's sweet and kind and dare I say...romantic. Their interactions are filled with sarcasm, sexual tension, and a playful antagonism that provides a welcome dose of lightheartedness to combat the moments of darkness.

The narrative of The Return seems to parallel events from The Covenant series and, although I felt as though I knew what to expect, this story defied my expectations and had me anxiously turning each page to find out what happened next. The Return is an action-packed, pulse-pounding, thrill-ride ripe with sexual tension and the author's signature snarky humor. Between learning about the new threats these characters face, dealing the resurgence of familiar mythologies, and dancing around the ill-advised attraction between Seth and Josie, there's never a moment to catch your breath before meeting the next obstacle head-on. By the end of the book, so much has happened yet little is resolved, leaving behind unanswered questions, unknown factors, and an uncertain knowledge of what’s to come. Fortunately, there’s no jaw-dropping cliffhanger that had me chucking the book across the room in stunned disbelief, although I am definitely impatient to follow the next leg of Seth and Josie’s journey.
