Where Sea Meets Sky by Karina Halle: Blog Tour Review & Giveaway

A new adult novel that perfectly captures the existential angst of your early twenties with raw wit, fresh insight, and true feeling from a critically adored USA TODAY bestselling author.

Joshua Miles has spent his early twenties spinning his wheels. Working dead-end jobs and living at home has left him exhausted and uninspired, with little energy to pursue his passion for graphic art. Until he meets Gemma Henare, a vivacious out-of-towner from New Zealand. What begins as a one-night stand soon becomes a turning point for Josh. He can't get Gemma out of his head, even after she has left for home, and finds himself throwing caution to the wind for the first time in his life.

It's not long before Josh is headed to New Zealand with only a backpack, some cash, and Gemma's name to go on. But when he finally tracks her down, he finds his adventure is only just beginning. Equally infatuated, Gemma leads him on a whirlwind tour across the beautiful country, opening Josh up to life, lust, love, and all the messy heartache in between. Because, when love drags you somewhere, it might never let go even when you know you have to say goodbye.

**I love to read when I have a chance. I love making new friends, too. But PLEASE don't add me if you're an author just wanting me to read your book and promote yourself shamelessly. You should have more of a reason for friending me than THAT. Also, please don't recommend me books, I have enough on my TBR and not enough time to read. And I'm a super picky reader. Cheers!**

The daughter of a Norwegian Viking and a Finnish Moomin, Karina Halle grew up in Vancouver, Canada with trolls and eternal darkness on the brain. This soon turned into a love of all things that go bump in the night and a rather sadistic appreciation for freaking people out. Like many of the flawed characters she writes, Karina never knew where to find herself and has dabbled in acting, make-up artistry, film production, screenwriting, photography, travel writing and music journalism. She eventually found herself in the pages of the very novels she wrote (if only she had looked there to begin with).

Karina holds a screenwriting degree from Vancouver Film School and a Bachelor of Journalism from TRU. Her travel writing, music reviews/interviews and photography have appeared in publications such as Consequence of Sound, Mxdwn and GoNomad Travel Guides. She currently lives on an island on the coast of British Columbia where she's preparing for the zombie apocalypse.

When I'm not writing, I'm reading. And when I'm not reading I might be writing up a review. I'm wary of books with a lot of hype but unless something has bad reviews across the board, I'll probably still take a chance on it and give my honest opinion. Everyone is different and I won't pass up an adventure just because someone else didn't like it. And that's what I think when I look at my bookshelf...what adventure can I go on today?

Review by Yvette:

I'm a bit ashamed to admit that Where Sea Meets Sky is my first Karina Halle novel. I know what you're thinking: How is this possible? She's only written about a dozen or so books. Although many of her books have piqued my interest, it was the prospect of a road trip romance that drew me to Where Sea Meets Sky, with thoughts of a romantic and carefree adventure dancing around in my head. While this was the case to a certain extent, the narrative has an emotional depth that snuck up on me the more I became invested in protagonists, Josh and Gemma. Their story is emotionally turbulent and undeniably sensual – facts, which, combined with the detailed descriptions the author used to bring Josh and Gemma's epic quest to life, made Where Sea Meets Sky seem so vivid and realistic that you feel as if you're experiencing every moment alongside of these characters.

For me, chemistry between characters is often the difference between enjoying a book and wishing I could live vicariously through these characters. From the moment Josh and Gemma meet, their connection is instant, powered by witty banter and chemistry so intense, I could practically see the sparks flying from the pages. They start things off fun and easy but once Josh meets up with Gemma in New Zealand, their relationship gets complicated thanks to the world's most potentially awkward road trip and the not-so-distant memory of an unforgettable one-night-stand. The ride is far from smooth and is, in fact, often uncomfortable and messy, but that’s exactly what made their story so compelling.

I could go on and on about how much I loved Josh but I'll try to keep the gushing to a minimum. He's portrayed as this tattooed, bad boy-type but luckily that description only applies to his appearance. Josh is quite romantic in a raunchy, unpolished way and I must say that I enjoyed the contrast immensely. Half the time I was laughing aloud in shock over one of his particularly naughty comments and the other half, I was swooning over the depth of his genuine feelings for Gemma. While my feelings for Josh were overwhelmingly positive, Gemma often tested my patience. There were many times when I wanted to shake some sense into Gemma, but I understood where she was coming from and I felt more connected to her character as the story progressed.

Where Sea Meets Sky follows Josh and Gemma as they attempt to discover who they are and what they're doing with their lives. Karina Halle has a way of delving into the innermost depths of these characters, exposing their hopes and their fears, their strengths and their vulnerabilities, so that we get all aspects of Josh and Gemma, both good and bad. This book is a lot of things – a romance, a road trip adventure, and a journey of self-discovery, but above all, it's a beautifully written and emotionally gripping story about finding the courage to take risks with life and love. Where Sea Meets Sky may have been my first book by this author, but it definitely won't be my last.
