Gus (Bright Side #2) by Kim Holden: Review

Blurb:

The journey that began in top-rated, best-selling Bright Side, continues ...

This is the story of Gus.
Losing himself.
Finding himself.
And healing along the way.

“ … but the honest-to-God truth is I don’t even know how to function anymore. Bright Side wasn’t only my best friend; she was like my other half ... the other half of my brain, the other half of my conscience, the other half of my sense of humor, the other half of my creativity, the other half of my heart. How do you go back to doing what you did before, when half of you is gone forever?”

About the Author:

Some of my favorite things: reading, writing, the two coolest guys on the planet (my husband and son), my bicycle (my husband built it for me), Facebook (I'm fairly certain it's an addiction at this point), iced coffee (hazelnut), and music (LOVE the 1975, Dredg, the xx, Haim, Teenage Bottlerocket, and 30 Seconds to Mars). I also love dreaming, which brings me to my next point. I have one bit of advice for anyone reading this ... follow your dreams. It's never too late. Get started today ... heck get started RIGHT NOW! I wanted to write a book 20 years ago. Instead I waited. And waited. I should've been writing. But I didn't. I don't do regrets, because the past is just that, the past. But let me tell you there's nothing in the world like achieving something you've dreamt about for years and years. So, get started. Make your dreams reality.

Review by Michelle:

Every once in a while there is a book that comes along that really affects you, that strikes a chord, that makes you feel way down deep in your soul. Even fewer and further in between are the books that truly inspire you, that make you want to be a better person, that change the way you think and feel, that make you want to aspire to do, and think, and be more. Bright Side by Kim Holden is one of those books and amazingly so is its follow up, Gus.

You would think Gus falls under this rare and remarkable classification because of Bright Side, but you would be wrong. Bright Side made me change my outlook. It influenced the way that I see and experience things and motivates me on a daily basis to work towards becoming even half of the shining light that Kate was. Gus is a wonderful complement to the lessons learned from the first book. It inspires me to live life to the fullest, to not take anything, or more importantly anyone, for granted, to always remember to stoke your own fire, to live in the moment, and of course to always do epic.

Gus is such a good, honest, intelligent, funny, incredible guy and the fact that he could come back from such a tragedy with a positive attitude, a light in his eye, and that same brilliant sense of humor and charisma is truly amazing and inspirational.

A testament to family, friendship, perseverance, and finding the right person at just the right time in your life when you most need them, Gus is tear-jerking in both the heart-breaking and life-affirming ways.

Gus is a comfort for those of us that have lost a loved one at some point in our lives, a striking and gut-wrenching story of healing and the journey traveled to get there, as well a beautiful and stirring story of friendship, unconditional love, positivity, and enjoying life and love and all the highs and lows along the way.
