One True Loves by Taylor Jenkins Reid: Blog Tour Review & Giveaway

Blurb:

From the author of Maybe in Another Life—named a People Magazine pick and a "Best Book of the Summer" by Glamour and USA Today—comes a breathtaking new love story about a woman unexpectedly forced to choose between the husband she has long thought dead and the fiancé who has finally brought her back to life.

In her twenties, Emma Blair marries her high school sweetheart, Jesse. They build a life for themselves, far away from the expectations of their parents and the people of their hometown in Massachusetts. They travel the world together, living life to the fullest and seizing every opportunity for adventure.

On their first wedding anniversary, Jesse is on a helicopter over the Pacific when it goes missing. Just like that, Jesse is gone forever.

Emma quits her job and moves home in an effort to put her life back together. Years later, now in her thirties, Emma runs into an old friend, Sam, and finds herself falling in love again. When Emma and Sam get engaged, it feels like Emma’s second chance at happiness.

That is, until Jesse is found. He’s alive, and he’s been trying all these years to come home to her. With a husband and a fiancé, Emma has to now figure out who she is and what she wants, while trying to protect the ones she loves.

Who is her one true love? What does it mean to love truly?

Emma knows she has to listen to her heart. She’s just not sure what it’s saying.

Review by Michelle:

When I read my first Taylor Jenkins Reid novel I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I thought the blurb sounded interesting, I always love finding new authors, and I figured I would give it a shot. I was in no way prepared for the emotional toll the book would take on me, how smart and insightful the story would be, and how deeply it would resonate with me causing me to look into myself, my relationships, and my beliefs, and question any and all pervasive views and philosophies. I have since become a huge fan of that introspection, the brainy romanticism, and the inspiring, practical love stories this author delivers. One True Loves is all of these things and even more.

"I am finishing up dinner with my family and my fiancé when my husband calls." And we are off! From that very first sentence, I was hooked. From there this book had its claws sunk so far into me, I didn't have a chance. After the recounting of the start of Jesse and Emma's relationship I was enchanted and totally in love with the two. The loss of Jesse had me so heartbroken and so absorbed in Emma and her story that the possibility of putting the book down became its own tangible pain for me. Then along comes Sam, again, bringing light and laughter and healing and drawing me further in still. Then comes THE choice, the choice that needs to be made, the one that tied me up in so many knots and made me yearn unbearably for one man or the other, sometimes even both, that if I didn't get resolution, and get it as quickly as possible, I feared it would take more than just an emotional toll. This book held me captive, it kept me completely riveted, it chewed me up and didn't spit me out until the very end.

In a really good love triangle, the reader finds themselves rooting for both men. You can envision the heroine with each of her choices and would be completely happy with either outcome. Those are the best kind of angsty love stories. The ones in which there is no slight favorite, there is no one man that you know that if you weren't being led astray by your easily swayed heart, this man would clearly be the marginally better, smarter choice. This story has no frontrunner. This story has no favorite no matter how faint. This story is the kind of love triangle where you are so torn apart you feel as if the heroine's pain is your own and you are living her plight right alongside her and it is oh, so achingly good.

Although it is completely incomprehensible to live through the soul shattering loss of one true love only to find out later after you've pulled yourself together and rebuilt your life without him, that he is not really gone, Emma's feelings, her reactions, her character, her relationships, both romantic and familial, every detail of this story was so incredibly realistic, relatable, emotive, and hard-hitting. We experience with Emma both the good and the bad emotions awakened, the beneficial and detrimental responses elicited, and the right and the wrong way to handle things, but we understand and we identify because, all of that is real and human and life isn't always good or perfect which is really what makes this story so perfect and so special.

As always, Taylor Jenkins Reid makes you think. What happens in lifelong relationships when priorities change, when circumstances change, when people change? What would have been if one small detail in life had not been or had changed? Can you have more than one true love in your lifetime? Is all love created equal? What makes love with one person better, more valuable, or truer than another's? Does it all really just boil down to you?

It seems like every book by this author just gets more and more enjoyable. One True Loves is so evocative, so enthralling, and so addicting I simply could not stop reading. So completely overwhelmed by this rollercoaster of emotion, so invested in these engrossing characters and the anxiety of this unique and spellbinding situation, I could not put this book down if I tried. A marvelously compelling, exceptionally emotional, stunningly beautiful story of love after loss, perseverance, growth, and self discovery, One True Loves is a remarkable and thought-provoking book with absolutely every feel imaginable and it is not to be missed.
