Blood Vow (Black Dagger Legacy #2) by J.R. Ward: Review

Blurb:

#1 New York Times bestselling author J. R. Ward returns with an all-new tale of paranormal passion in the world of the Black Dagger Brotherhood.

The Black Dagger Brotherhood continues to train the best of the best to join them in the deadly battle against the Lessening Society. Among the new recruits, Axe proves to be a cunning and vicious fighter—and also a loner isolated because of personal tragedy. When an aristocratic female needs a bodyguard, Axe takes the job, though he’s unprepared for the animal attraction that flares between him and the one he is sworn to protect.

For Elise, who lost her first cousin to a grisly murder, Axe’s dangerous appeal is enticing—and possibly a distraction from her grief. But as they delve deeper into her cousin’s death, and their physical connection grows into so much more, Axe fears that the secrets he keeps and his tortured conscience will tear them apart.

Rhage, the Brother with the biggest heart, knows all about self-punishing, and he wants to help Axe reach his full potential. But when an unexpected arrival threatens Rhage and Mary’s new family, he finds himself back in the trenches again, fighting against a destiny that will destroy all he holds most dear.

As Axe’s past becomes known, and fate seems to be turning against Rhage, both males must reach deep—and pray that love, rather than anger, will be their lantern in the darkness.

Review by Michelle:

Ok so seriously, can you ever go wrong with a J.R. Ward, Black Dagger book? I mean I'm getting kind of tired of raving about The Warden, the brothers, and the trainees and I'm sure anyone that has read more than one of my J.R. Ward reviews may just agree. The thing is, I can't NOT gush over these books! The trainees in both Blood Kiss and Blood Vow, the Black Dagger Brotherhood spin-off series, bring us back to the early days of our beloved series in which the story revolves around one central couple, is pulse-racingly action packed, and is both fun and sexy as hell. What about our favorite fighters, you ask? Not to worry, there are still plenty of glimpses of the vampires that stole our hearts along the way, but Axe and Elise take center stage, and rightfully so. This dirt poor bad boy and the sweet and sheltered aristocrat may be opposites, but when they attract, they combust.

I love a broken bad boy with a soft spot for the right girl and Axe might just be my favorite. Axe's pain, his determination not to become co-dependent and swallowed whole by a relationship, his honor, his courage, and his devotion immediately gain him some major respect points and make him an instantly loveable character despite his generalizations and questionable coping skills. Elise is one of the spunkiest, honest, tenacious, most lovable Ward heroines yet. It takes a whole lot of gumption to stand up to the likes of Axe and the old ways of the glymera, but Elise is not afraid to speak her mind, to go after what she wants, or stand up for what she believes in.

Axe and Elise could not be more opposite if they tried; good and bad, light and dark, rich and poor, open-minded and biased, lover and fighter. And though we may have seen the opposites attract theme a time or two in the Black Dagger stories, this combination of what turns out to be a noble badass and a not so fragile after all aristocrat is supremely entertaining, electric, exciting and engrossing.

Between Axe and Elise, the continuation of Rhage, Mary, and Bitty's story, lots of Lassiter, and a hint of Peyton, Novo, and Saxton, Blood Vow is nearly impossible to put down. Powerfully gripping, uniquely thrilling and sexy, passionate, emotional, and seriously fun, I simply cannot get enough of this book, this series and this author and Blood Vow is the perfect example why. This book has it all. It will consume you and leave you greedy for more. If you have not yet had the pleasure meeting these brothers, the trainees that fight alongside them, and their spirited females, the Black Dagger Legacy is the perfect chance to jump in and get hooked. You won't regret it.
