The Darkest Sunrise (The Darkest Sunrise #1) by Aly Martinez: Blog Tour Review

Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me.

Whoever coined that phrase is a bald-faced liar. Words are often the sharpest weapon of all, triggering some of the most powerful emotions a human can experience.

“You’re pregnant.”

“It’s a boy.”

“Your son needs a heart transplant.”

Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me.

Syllables and letters may not be tangible, but they can still destroy your entire life faster than a bullet from a gun.

Two words—that was all it took to extinguish the sun from my sky.

“He’s gone.”

For ten years, the darkness consumed me.

In the end, it was four deep, gravelly words that gave me hope of another sunrise.

“Hi. I’m Porter Reese.”

Review by Michelle:

The striking and poignant theme of The Darkest Sunrise had me in a seriously contemplative mood over the significant influence of words. We've all been taught to turn the other cheek, to not give words power over us, or to impart our worth, but at the same time, we've all been touched by the strength that mere words can have, both good and bad. When words come in the form of an intensely potent, evocative story though, words are everything. Words can thoroughly devastate and break your heart, they can bring joy and immense relief, they can excite and enthrall, they can warm you, they can inspire you, they can give you hope, and they can entice you. When it comes to words that come from an immeasurably talented wordsmith such as Aly Martinez, these words can make or break you, they can open up a whole new world, a new understanding, new thoughts and feelings, and new, unimaginable experiences. The mere words that make up The Darkest Sunrise will break you, they will tear you apart, but they will slowly and steadily piece you back together, they will make you laugh and cry, worry and wonder, and heavily swoon, and you are guaranteed to love absolutely every minute of it.

Be still my beating heart, these feels are trying to kill me! If it's possible to slay someone with angst, Aly Martinez must have been out to prove it is indeed possible, because she just about succeeded. A story that will have you sobbing one minute and laughing out loud the next, anxious and tense one minute, giddy and invigorated the next. You will feel both exhilarated and exhausted by this incredibly tempestuous story, but if you usually shy away from this type of book, let me just assure you, it is more than worth the emotional upheaval.

Porter is effortlessly charming, unwaveringly honest, and supremely swoony. The kind of hero that is almost too good to be true, yet he's not overdone or over-the-top in any way. The kind of hero that rules your thoughts with his charm, determination, and quick wit. The stuff even the dreamiest of fictional heroes is made of. Charlotte is strong, motivated, and above all else, a survivor. The perfect example of bad things happening to good people, Charlotte's situation will rip out your heart, her perseverance will awe you, and her guilt and pain makes her all too real and relatable. With an intense and heady connection you can feel instantly which is only fueled by this couple's fun and clever banter, not only are each of these characters utterly engaging and completely captivating on their own, but once the two come together, it is a bond that you simply cannot turn away from, a bond you will cherish and cheer for, plead for and covet.

Every time I write an Aly Martinez review I feel like a broken record. This is her best book yet, one of my favorite books of the year, a must read! Unfortunately, I am forced to keep saying these things over and over because, with each and every book, they could not be more true. With the most perfectly endearing and irresistible characters imaginable, beautifully poetic and masterful writing, and a story so full of emotion and surprise you will feel relieved that there is two weeks between the release of book one and book two, as you will be so wrung dry, you won't have even one more ounce to give. If you are not a devoted Aly Martinez fan yet, you are sure to become one after this masterpiece. The Darkest Sunrise will not only have you counting down the seconds until the release of the continuation, it will have you clamoring for each of her previous works so as not to miss out on this author's incredible insight, craft, and talent.
