From Blood and Ash by Jennifer L. Armentrout: ARC Review

Blurb:

A Maiden…

Chosen from birth to usher in a new era, Poppy’s life has never been her own. The life of the Maiden is solitary. Never to be touched. Never to be looked upon. Never to be spoken to. Never to experience pleasure. Waiting for the day of her Ascension, she would rather be with the guards, fighting back the evil that took her family, than preparing to be found worthy by the gods. But the choice has never been hers.

A Duty…

The entire kingdom’s future rests on Poppy’s shoulders, something she’s not even quite sure she wants for herself. Because a Maiden has a heart. And a soul. And longing. And when Hawke, a golden-eyed guard honor bound to ensure her Ascension, enters her life, destiny and duty become tangled with desire and need. He incites her anger, makes her question everything she believes in, and tempts her with the forbidden.

A Kingdom…

Forsaken by the gods and feared by mortals, a fallen kingdom is rising once more, determined to take back what they believe is theirs through violence and vengeance. And as the shadow of those cursed draws closer, the line between what is forbidden and what is right becomes blurred. Poppy is not only on the verge of losing her heart and being found unworthy by the gods, but also her life when every blood-soaked thread that holds her world together begins to unravel.

Yvette's Review:

If there are any authors that could get me to drop everything and read a secret book, it would be Jennifer L. Armentrout. Going in to From Blood and Ash, I had no idea what I was in for and, the more I read, the more I knew that the blurb in no way could've prepared me for what was to come. I'm going to be as vague as possible going forward (because: spoilers) but I will start by saying that this is Jennifer L. Armentrout's most jaw-dropping story to date. Packed with gasp-inducing revelations, pulse-pounding suspense, and nail-biting danger, From Blood and Ash is a high fantasy novel that's nothing short of epic.

With From Blood and Ash, Jennifer L. Armentrout crafts an intricate world of fantastical creatures and a rich, detailed history. As the Maiden awaiting her Ascension, our heroine, Poppy, is the hope of her kingdom. Veiled to conceal her identity and sheltered to protect her life, Poppy is this untouchable being, held to a higher standard and higher expectations because of who she is and what she represents. She’s fiercely independent, selflessly brave, and deceptively strong, but she's forced to hide these qualities by all but those closest to her. It isn't until she meets Hawke - a strikingly handsome, audaciously bold, and incorrigibly flirtatious new Royal Guard - that Poppy begins to voice some of the doubts that have been festering the closer she gets to her Ascension and indulge in her innermost feelings and desires.

Told through Poppy's point-of-view, From Ash and Blood is purposely mysterious, revealing bits and pieces of its mythology with each chapter. As a reader, becoming privy to each new truth revealed alongside Poppy makes the narrative that much more impactful. The storyline and these characters are not black and white, but more complex than you could possibly imagine. What Jennifer L. Armentrout does so brilliantly is create characters that are flawed, yet thoroughly compelling and endearing. But it wouldn't be a Jennifer L. Armentrout book without enough twists and turns to make you rethink everything you thought you knew.

With a deliciously slow-burning forbidden romance, characters that are multi-dimensional and completely riveting, and a narrative that’ll keep you on the proverbial edge of your seat from start to finish, From Blood and Ash is a must-read novel from Jennifer L. Armentrout. From what I could tell, this is only the beginning, and I can’t wait to find out what happens next.
