From #1 New York Times bestselling author Abbi Glines comes the next new adult novel in the Rosemary Beach series, in which we meet Mase, a Texas heartthrob first introduced in Take a Chance who comes to Rosemary Beach to stir things up.
I had an urge to fix all her problems. Which was stupid. She was doing fine without me. But something about those big eyes…
Mase Colt-Manning has always preferred his humble life as a Texas rancher to his birthright as the son of a legendary rock star. In fact, he rarely visits his father’s rarefied world in Rosemary Beach, especially if it means bunking at his vile half-sister Nan’s house—until one visit leads to a chance encounter with a young, gorgeous house maid who awakens him with her off-key but spirited imitation of a country music star…
Reese Ellis finally has her freedom. After escaping a lifetime of abuse from her parents and classmates for an undiagnosed learning disorder, she seizes the opportunity to be a house maid to some of the richest families in Rosemary Beach. But her job is in jeopardy when she causes an accident at the home of her most important client, Nan Dillon. When a hot, half-naked stranger with a cowboy’s swagger comes to her rescue, she’s intrigued—then afraid once he shows his own interest. Reese has never met a trustworthy man in her life. Will Mase be any different?

Review by Yvette:
Can we please just take a second to lament the fact that the extremely sexy, smooth-talking heroes that populate every Abbi Glines novel aren’t, in fact, real? One of the many reasons why I devour each new book by Abbi Glines is to get lost in the fantasy of a handsome, strong, and confident guy who worships on which his lover walks and Mase Colt-Manning is everything you could hope for as the romantic hero of the author’s newest release, When I’m Gone. Not only is he the quintessential Alpha male, but there’s also the added bonus of his Southern charm and his deliciously naughty way with words that had me giggling like a schoolgirl and fanning my overheated cheeks. I was born and raised in Texas and I’ve sure never seen the likes of Mase strutting around with his cowboy hat and tight-fitting jeans, but I digress…
At first glance, wig is a fairly standard New Adult Romance, following a young couple as they transition from friends to lovers. Yes, Reese has a backstory which adds a layer of emotional depth that actually had me tearing up on several occasions, yet her story is one that is a recurring theme within the NA genre. What makes this story stand out is the strength of the bond developed by protagonists, Mase and Reese – a bond that was both immediate and intense, sparked by a mutual attraction that grew along with their friendship. Their connection is so palpable that its echo lingers on each page of the book, drawing each into the other's orbit when they're close to each other and serving as a promise of what's to come when they're hundreds of miles apart.
From the very first page, Mase and Reese were characters that I genuinely cared about. Reese was someone with whom I could empathize and Mase was the knight in shining armor that came to her rescue. Together, they are a fascinating contradiction between shy and confident, vulnerable and strong, innocent and indecent. This dichotomy results in interactions that are increasingly intimate and more sensual than a good portion of erotic novels I've read. When I'm Gone is undoubtedly the author's sexiest book to date, building from a slow burn to an uncontrollable fiery passion. The physical intimacy between Reese and Mase was just as vital to the story as their emotional intimacy and When I’m Gone seems to have only scratched the surface of what they could become as a couple.
When I'm Gone is the kind of story that is so engrossing, I sat down with the intention of reading for ten minutes and, before I knew it, I was halfway through the book. It was an entertaining, enjoyable read that was emotionally gripping, sweet and oh-so-steamy. As the first of two books featuring Mase and Reese, When I’m Gone was satisfying on its own, yet the final page ensured that I will be anxiously awaiting their return in When You’re Back.
