Better When He's Brave (Welcome to the Point #3) by Jay Crownover: Blog Tour Review, Excerpt & Giveaway

Blurb:

In New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Jay Crownover’s third novel in her sexy, thrilling Welcome to the Point series, a woman’s search for repentance leads her to the one man from her past she can’t forget as they join forces to save their city—and the explosive love neither can live without.

Titus King has always seen his world in black and white. There is a firm right and wrong in his mind, which is why as a teenager he left behind the only family he’d ever known to make a better life for himself. Now a police detective in one of the worst cities in the country, he can’t deny his life has turned into a million different shades of gray.

The new criminal element in The Point has brought vengeance and destruction right to Titus’s front door, and walking the straight and narrow seems far less important now. The difference between right and wrong is nothing compared to keeping those he loves alive. To add to his already strained moral compass, the beautiful and mysterious Reeve Black has made her way back to town. This girl might be as dangerous to Titus as the guy trying to destroy the Point but he can’t walk away because he needs her—in more ways than one.

Reeve knows all about the threat trying to destroy The Point. She knows how ruthless, how vicious, and how cruel this new danger can be… and instead of running away, she wants to help. Reeve knows that she has a lot to repent for and saving the city, plus the hot cop that she hasn’t been able to forget might just be the only way she can finally find some inner peace.

With an entire city poised on the brink of war, Titus and Reeve stand in the crossfire—and it will take two brave souls to fight for the ultimate love.

“Everyone has a breaking point.”

I sounded gruff and really had to concentrate on getting the words out because she leaned forward and her lips hit right below my ear on my rough jaw. Her teeth started to nibble and her tongue lapped a long wet trail all the way up behind my ear where she breathed, “I would love to see you when you reach yours.”

She curled a hand around the back of my neck and rubbed her cheek against mine. When I let my monster have at her, it took in giant mouthfuls, gobbled her up, and tried to burn as fast and as hot as the pleasure would allow. She wasn’t kidding when she said hers needed to be soothed. Every move she made was deliberate, erotic. We touched everywhere and somehow it was more intimate than all the times I had been inside of her over the last month. She brushed her chest against my own and I decided the playing field needed to level out a little, so I hooked my hands under her shirt and lifted it up off over her head. Her hair fell back down around us like a dark curtain and I grabbed her face so I could kiss her. She blinked at me with big eyes and smiled.

“You are the only one that sees it, over and over again. You were the breaking point from the moment you walked in the door to tell me you helped Novak grab Dovie. I wanted to be disgusted, to hate you, but I didn’t. I thought you were beautiful and resilient. You seemed so misguided and lost, and even then I wanted to get you naked and fuck you on my desk.”

Her face lowered to mine and our lips touched just a tiny bit. One of her hands skated down the center of my chest and landed on my belt buckle. I reciprocated by popping the clasp on the back of her bra and pulling it out of my way.

“You should’ve tried. I would’ve let you.” The words danced across my lips and somewhere in the center of my chest an animal howled in delight. That was what was missing in my life. Someone that appreciated all the sacrifice, the hard choices I had made to become the man I was, but who could also appreciate the fucked-up kid I had been.

About the Author:

I’m supposed to share interesting details about myself so that my readers get to know me so here we go in no particular order: I’m an natural redhead even though I haven’t seen my real hair color in years, I’m a big fan of tattoos and have a half sleeve on either arm and various other pieces all over the place, I’ve been in the bar industry since I was in college and it has always offered interesting insight into how men and women interact with each other, I have 3 dogs that are all crazy, I live in Colorado and love the snow, I love music and in all reality wish I could be a rock star not a writer or a bartender but I have zero talent so there is that.

I love to write, love to read and all I’m interested in is a good story with interesting characters that make the reader feel something.

Review by Michelle:

Maybe bad boys aren't your thing, maybe your prefer your men a bit more honest, virtuous, even a tad heroic. Jay Crownover's Welcome to The Point series has been a sliding scale thus far from the baddest of the bad, to the smooth and charming king of the underground ruling with the best of intentions for the greater good, and now the noble detective determined to single handedly save The Point. As things steadily begin to turn from strictly black and white to countless shades of grey, Better When He's Brave is Titus' struggle to reconcile what he knows to be right and wrong word for word in the eyes of the law and what he feels to be right and just in his heart and mind.

After following a real deal bad boy and a well meaning kingpin on the wrong side of the law, this time around the criminal in question is the girl. Not your average girl next door or even your ordinary sassy heroine, Reeve Black is a girl who has been consumed by vengeance and though she is far from evil she has been operating way too far in those grey areas for Mr. Straight and Narrow, Titus King. Reeve is easy to empathize with, her motivations behind her actions were not within the confines of the law, but they were definitely understandable. She turns out to be, against all odds, just what Titus needs as well to help keep him balanced and she is the perfect catalyst to bring out a whole different side of the hard and unyielding man.

I, myself, love all sorts of boys. Bad boys, good boys, alpha boys, shy boys, bold boys, and of course brave boys but as much as I loved Bax and Race, I have a certain soft spot for those boys in blue. I had high expectations of Detective King and I would say that he encompassed the majority of what I was looking for in such an upright and honorable man. I do have to admit that while I understood his struggle to grasp the grey areas, I was still a tad put off with the way that he treated Reeve throughout most of the story. While appreciating and understanding of her and her actions in his mind, when together he was often gruff, thoughtless, and a bit uncaring. A nice twist on your typical nice guy though, we find that Titus has many layers including a darker side that he struggles to calm and contain on a daily basis which makes him all the more interesting and his and Reeve's relationship all the more fitting and intense.

Amid the chaos of The Point, an intricate revenge scheme, and animosity at every turn, the pairing and collaboration of Titus and Reeve, the way in which their relationship develops, and the evolution of that relationship was extremely real and relatable, passionate and enthralling. A smoldering ember just waiting for the chance to combust, as different as these two may be, they are just as perfectly suited for one another.

Better When He's Brave is a whirlwind of heart pounding action, unforeseen twists, and gripping emotion. Find yourself still craving a bad boy? Race's partner in crime, Nassir's story is up next and he may just prove to be the baddest of them all.
