The Darkest Flame (Roadmap to Your Heart #1) by Christina Lee: ARC Review

From the author of There You Stand, a new male/male romance about an errant motorcycle recruit and the captivating bartender who sends his wheels spinning down an all too tempting road.

Vaughn O’Keefe has been part owner of the Hog’s Den for years. Privy to plenty of Disciples of the Road business, he’s never been more ruffled as when a new recruit named “Smoke” walks through the door. Something about the man gets his blood pumping, but he knows to keep his preferences under wraps around the club.

“Smoke” Callahan has done a couple of rehab stints and is finally clean, thanks to help from the Disciples. He’s on the right path and isn’t about to get sidetracked, no matter how much the guy who manages the bar gets beneath his skin. Besides, his last relationship with a man left him scared, alone, and with a nightmare of an addiction.

When the Hog’s Den becomes shorthanded, and Smoke is ordered to help out the one man he can’t have, his longing for the bartender reaches blistering proportions. Vaughn figures a night together should be enough to satisfy their mutual attraction. But neither banks on just how scorching hot it might be.

As Smoke’s past unravels and the one person he hopes never to lay eyes on again messes with all he holds sacred, it’s time to involve the Disciples. Problem is, he’ll have to risk his membership, his heart, and his own hide to keep everyone he cares about safe.

Review by Michelle:

What do you get when you combine a rugged MC recruit with the club's charismatic barkeep? A sizzlingly sexy story full of Christina Lee's signature heart pounding, pulse racing, breathtaking sexual tension, action (in EVERY sense of the word), and enchanting romance. After picking up this book, I compulsively devoured it in mere hours. Hardly able to come up for air, I was so enthralled by these two magnetic men, I could barely put it down for anything.

Vaughn is sweet and charming, yet intense and totally hot. Smoke is mysterious and complicated yet captivating and totally irresistible. The attraction between these two is positively heady. An intoxicating spell made up of electricity, yearning, and allure that demands your attention, makes you squirm, and absolutely will not allow you to walk away.

An intriguing story of two men fighting against every instinct drawing them to one another in an attempt to strike a delicate balance between machismo and respect and attraction and longing. Their circumstances make it close to impossible to be together, but with a connection like theirs, there is no denying the inevitable. The way in which each man finds the strength to embrace their irrefutable feelings and is willing to do whatever it takes, as well as the acceptance found as a result of their fortitude is heartwarming and inspiring. In addition to the strain of forced secrecy, a mistake of the past reemerges with a hidden agenda threatening to destroy everything making for an action packed, edge of your seat ride involving warring MCs, disgruntled rival club members, and the lure of old addictions.

To be honest I have in the past often found myself a bit bored with the monotony of love scene after love scene in a book. I am definitely a believer in too much of a good thing when it comes to the scenes that take place in the bedroom. Christina Lee, on the other hand, is such a master of chemistry and connection and so adept at great storytelling even in the midst of a super steamy scene that Vaughn and Smoke's intimacy never got old for me. In fact, I found myself downright riveted and hungry for even more. To say this book was scorching would be an understatement.

Christina Lee has done it again. Whether it is new adult, contemporary, or male/male, you simply cannot go wrong with a book penned by this author. The Darkest Flame is delightfully sweet, powerfully sexy, and spectacularly engrossing.
