The Deepest Blue (Roadmap to Your Heart #2) by Christina Lee: Review

Lee exchanges skyline for swampland in the next book of her male/male romance series, Roadmap to Your Heart.

Rugged and conventional Callum Montgomery enjoys running Shady Pines hunting preserve, except for the secret that’s eating him alive. When his sister brings a date for a family wedding, he can’t stand the arrogant city slicker with the stick up his perfectly fine ass. He doesn’t understand his draw to Dean, who pushes his buttons at every turn, but he’d never dream of betraying his sibling over some lust fueled fantasy.

Handsome and conscientious Dean Abbott is a research assistant in his university’s biology lab. When his roommate, Cassie, begs him to be her pretend date in front of her meddling family, he begrudgingly agrees to help. He doesn’t anticipate being enchanted by the countryside, the colorful cast of characters, or her sexy and brooding straight brother.

When contempt turns to passion and leads to stolen moments in a sugar cane field, Callum can’t help longing for the kind of connection he believes he can never have. But not even the world’s most heart-melting kiss can bridge the vast philosophical differences between the men.

Dean’s return to his urban lifestyle leaves him restless, his mind continually wandering to the charming setting that spoke to something missing deep inside him. Because you can take the city boy out of the country but you can’t make him forget the intriguing man he left behind.

Review by Michelle:

Do opposites attract? In Christina Lee's newest m/m romance, The Deepest Blue, they certainly do. And Dean and Callum can't get much more opposite. City boy meets country boy and fall in love. Simple, right? Well, Dean is an openly gay vegetarian city boy who meets Callum, a hunter from a wildlife preserve in the south with a bit more to hide. Maybe not so simple after all. The kicker? The two meet when Dean is taken to meet his roommate's family. His roommate who just so happens to be Callum's sister while Dean just so happens to be playing the part of her new fake boyfriend.

A little healthy disdain certainly never hurt anyone and, as far as I'm concerned, is the perfect way to start a relationship off right as their instant powerful attraction and the intensity of some confusing feelings is what causes the two to butt heads in the first place. The tension rolling off these two in waves whenever they are around each other is thick and heady and ripe with desire and restrained lust. The strong feelings and convictions Callum has about his family and the land they live off of and the passion Dean holds for biology and environmental issues only serve to fuel the storm that is brewing between them that gradually gains momentum with each encounter.

Two hot men for the price of one, how can you go wrong? Usually rugged gingers are not my thing no matter how hunky, but Callum stole my heart in this one. Even without getting into the whole vulnerable alpha thing he has going on, his sacrifice for and whole hearted devotion to his family may be a bit sad considering all that he is willing to give up for the good of the whole, but it is immensely admirable and endearing. The way that he is always there for his younger brother and stepped up for him when it was really needed was tender and heartwarming and guaranteed to win over even the most obstinate holdout.

I may have fallen hard for the stubborn country boy, but don't underestimate the allure of the brainy scientist. Dean is certainly nothing to sneeze at. Dean has the whole tall, dark, and handsome thing going for him. Smart and confident with the biggest heart and those sexy black framed glasses only the hottest of nerds can pull off. What's not to love?

Much of this book was about the buildup as opposed to the action which is always my favorite part of a Christina Lee book anyway. Don't get me wrong there are plenty of sexy times and they are definitely hot, but I really loved and appreciated the way this burgeoning romance, that seems ill-fated from the start, was so intently focused on for the majority of the book. I loved the pretense of Dean and Callum's meeting, the way they start out butting heads, being forced to acknowledge a connection, watching their feelings grow, and all of the seemingly insurmountable obstacles between them making for a wonderful romance that has the opportunity to fully play out before being overshadowed by steam.

While I loved just about everything about this book, I wish the ending would have been a bit more hashed out. I was a bit taken aback by an ending that seemed to suddenly come out of nowhere when there was still so much more to explore with the couple. I need to know more about what the future has in store for these two!

The Deepest Blue is cute and sweet, touching and sexy. Not your average m/m from the original storyline to the unique setting. You will love these boys and adore each and every secondary character as well. Despite my affinity for Callum and Dean there is one young man in particular that totally steals the show. Billie Montgomery will keep you hooked and petitioning for a follow -up featuring this favorite little brother.
