Emergency Engagement (Love Emergency #1) by Samanthe Beck: ARC Review

A sexy category romance from Entangled's Brazen imprint...

He needs the kind of rescue only she can provide…
Glass artist Savannah Smith expected a marriage proposal for Thanksgiving—just not from her strong, silent, super-hot neighbor. But when misplaced mail and a wayward can of paint lands them in a compromising position right as her family arrives for dinner, they assume he’s “The One” she’s been talking about.

Then his family shows up.

Fate dealt a crippling blow to paramedic Beau Montgomery’s heart, and he isn’t about to put it at risk again. Except, with his mother crying tears of joy over his surprise engagement to the sexy little blonde next door, he can’t bring himself to ruin her “Christmas miracle.”

Somewhere between the paint can to the head and the chaotic family trip to the ER, Beau manages to talk Savannah into being his fake fiancée long enough to survive the holidays.

If, of course, they don’t fall in love first…

Samanthe Beck is a USA Today bestselling author of sexy contemporary romance novels, including The McCade Brothers series from Entangled Publishing’s super-sizzling Brazen line.

Sam was transfixed from an early age with any story featuring a handsome prince, a fabulous dress and, of course, the enchanting kiss. She eventually aspired her to write her own grown-up version of a happily-ever-after tale.

When not living the glamorous life of a romance author (ummm… behind her computer screen), Samanthe likes to relax at home in Malibu, California with her husband, their young son, Bebe the trash talkin’ chihuahua and a furry ninja named Kitty. Their love, support, and willingness to eat take out three or more times a week enables Samanthe to pursue her literary dreams.

Review by Yvette:

Who doesn’t love a good opposites-attract romance? Tack on a fake engagement storyline between a sexy paramedic and a bubbly artist, and off-the-charts chemistry, and you have the makings of Samanthe Beck’s new release, Emergency Engagement. Protagonists, Savannah Smith and Beau Montgomery may have been thrown together via a misunderstanding, yet their mutual, near-palpable attraction forged a connection between them that couldn’t be denied. I went into the story expecting a fan-your-face-steamy romance (which I got), but I wasn’t anticipating the emotional attachment I’d develop with these characters. Their backstories and their character development were instrumental in elevating this book from a run-of-the-mill sexy romance to a story with true emotional impact.

Due to a twist of fate (otherwise known as an unfortunate accident with a paint can), neighbors Savannah and Beau find themselves smack-dab in the middle of a fake engagement. The concept is a bit unconventional, though undoubtedly entertaining thanks to the contrasting personalities of the two main characters and their fun, flirty repartee. As mismatched as they seem at first appearance - Savannah's vibrant while Beau's more subdued, she's optimistic while he's world-weary and he's emotionally guarded while she wears her heart on her sleeve - they somehow click, their connection powered by an intense physical attraction. The first half of the story is a gradual build-up of their relationship, rife with sexual tension, uncontrollable passion and unfettered desire. Once that tension is unleashed, the couple more than makes up for lost time, ratcheting up the heat level from simply steamy to beyond erotic.

With Emergency Engagement, Samanthe Beck doesn’t fail to deliver the heat, but she also creates an emotional connection not just between Savannah and Beau but between these characters and the reader. As a paramedic, it’s Beau’s job to save people’s lives, yet he’s the one in need of rescuing. He expends so much energy keeping a seal on his emotions that when the seal is removed, those emotions are heart-wrenchingly raw and brutally honest. Savannah is the light to Beau’s dark - exactly the type of compassionate and giving person that would give him hope to move on from a painful past. Overall, Emergency Engagement is a satisfying, enjoyable read, with everything you could want in an Entangled Brazen book: sexual tension, erotic gratification, and just enough angst to set your emotions awhirl.
