The Brightest Sunset (The Darkest Sunrise #2) by Aly Martinez: Blog Tour Review

Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me.

Words destroyed me.

“I’m sorry. She didn’t make it.”

“Daddy, he can’t breathe!”

“There’s nothing more we can do for your son.”

Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me.

Those syllables and letters became my executioner. I told myself that, if I didn’t acknowledge the pain and the fear, they would have no power over me. But, as the years passed, the hate and the anger left behind began to control me.

Two words—that was all it took to plunge my life into darkness.

“He’s gone.”

In the end, it was four soft, silky words that gave me hope of another sunrise.

“Hi. I’m Charlotte Mills.”

Review by Michelle:

After the devastating turn of events at the end of the first book, a devastating no-win situation at the start of this one, devastating news, and devastating circumstances, get ready for a whole new level of devastation with Aly Martinez's The Brightest Sunset. If you thought the first book was a roller coaster of emotion, you haven't seen anything yet.

Beginning with an impossible and seemingly unwinnable situation for all sides, the shocking revelation of the first book has dire consequences for this conclusion making for even greater emotional turmoil, still bigger hills and valleys, and an even greater payoff in the end.

After the shocking ending of The Darkest Sunrise, I didn't think things could get much crazier, but it seems nothing comes easy for Charlotte and Porter; not their careers, not their relationship, and certainly not their family. While the first book is heartbreaking. amusing, and startling, this second book is a complete and total upheaval of ups and downs of absolutely every kind; emotional highs and lows, high hopes and grim results, incredible news for one becomes soul shattering for another, love and loathing, uplifting then terrifying, heaven and hell, darkness and light.

You think you know utter ruin in the form of mere words on a page? Think again. Gutted, annihilated, and destroyed, with just two words from Aly Martinez and The Brightest Sunset had me astounded and shell shocked, immediately jumping to the worst possible, unthinkable conclusion, weepy and sullen. Aly Martinez knows just how to toy with you. Whether it is making you believe the impossible, thinking you know what is headed your way, or assuming the worst, you are always in for an unpredictable ride when it comes to this clever author and believe me, this time takes the cake. The best part? You will question what you just read, you will question your sanity, you will question how you could even think something so unfathomable, you will question your gullibility, and you may even resent Aly Martinez a bit for such a brilliantly horrible trick, but at the same time, you will feel such colossal relief you are virtually guaranteed to be awed and envious of such deft manipulation, all while begging for more.

Yes, this book is heavy. It revolves around some weighty subjects and serious problems and it is heart-rending and downright painful at times, but is that all? Not even close. The Brightest Sunset is also beautiful and moving and so very satisfying. Not merely a cry your eyes out, yell and scream, emotionally exhausting journey, but one of humor, passion, perseverance, dedication, unconditional love, hope, cooperation for the sake of what is truly important, and sweet romance as well. I can't think of a single author more adept at intensely powerful, extraordinarily intoxicating, and utterly enjoyable duets than Aly Martinez and she just seems to be getting better and better. All hail the Queen of must read duets!
